When to Zip It: NYorker Article Infuriates Buffy

Sad that this is our piece of the day, but I was sitting at Starbuck's last night reading what I thought was a terrific piece on film star agencies in the New Yorker. I noticed that the centerpiece of the story had A LOT to say about particular Hollywood big namers--ummm, like Chris Rock and Sarah M. Gellar. I thought Dave had some solid business savvy to him, although cocky and abrasive in its delivery. My intuition was right--he was too blatant--because this morning in the NY Post I read that
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s public relations rep called to tell us the actress “has left the William Morris Agency effective immediately because of The New Yorker article.” However, she will remain with The Firm, her management company. Gellar was upset after William Morris president Dave Wirtschafter dished and dissed his clients — and her — in the highbrow weekly. Lucy Liu also ankled William Morris, but not “because of the article,” a WMA rep said. Of course not.
I beleive all of us who operate in business circles or client driven arenas can profit from the obvious lesson--keep your trap shut! I've had my own clients have to remind me to keep names out of the equation. Embarrassing, I know. If you need to name-drop, use John Doe, for Christ's sake.
