In Vino Veritas: Sideways

Finally saw "Sideways" the other night. This Oscar-nominated homage to wine and love was poignant to say the least. The film follows a week long road trip between 2 buddies, one of which is getting married and this is ostensibly his last chance to sow a couple of wild oats. The other guy is a shrink-seeing, pill-popping depressive whose only reason to live is a fine Chardonnay. Both ultimately learn how to cope with tragedy -- the depressive realizes to let go of the past while the other learns that rebelliousness for rebelliousness's sake is futile. Quite ingeniously the film analogizes the evolution of a grape into a glass of fine wine to the equally detailed development of the human spirit. For life doesn't necessarily follow a predictable, forward looking path -- we move through it sideways, sometimes feeling stuck and like we are running on empty.
