Fred Wilson's Karate Chop!
Seasoned VC Fred Wilson has started a new venture capitalist firm in the heart of NYC. It is called Union Square Ventures--guess where their offices are? Fred is of course Managing Partner @ Flatiron Partners, which has a stellar track record and currently holds about 15 cutting edge companies in their portfolio. I won't forget the first time I heard about FlatIron--it was in a cool, little independent film called
Startup.com, the documentary about
govWorks.com, a web service that let you pay your parking tickets on line. govWorks of course went belly up during the 2000 teck meltdown--like most tech startups at the time, their gargantuan burn rate got the best of them. Anyways, FlatIron describe themselves as a
New York-based venture capital firm that develops and nurtures companies who are shaping the future of technology. With an emphasis on early stage investments in emerging technology, software and services, the Flatiron partnership has invested in 60 companies since 1996, and has established numerous innovative and market-leading enterprises. Flatiron Partners' limited partner is JP Morgan Partners (formerly Chase Capital Partners), a global partnership with over $24 billion under management.
One cool company they're invested in is
Intelliseek--makers of
Blogpulse (a text mining portal us bloggers depend on for added readership). Intelliseek
delivers actionable business intelligence solutions that drive ROI and decision-making for progressive marketers, researchers and government professionals.
Let's face it, Fred Wilson knows technology like Bruce Lee knows nun-chuks.
Union Sq. Ventures should rake in a lot of dough in due time, if they aren't already. C'mon, these guys were first to the party with
Audible.com (ADBL)--a digital audio and entertainment company whose shares have risen from penny stock status to the $30 range. Now, Audible enjoys a 500+ million dollar market cap and I'm sure Fred is all smiles.
