David Denby's Latest Book

First of all, let me say that I'm an avid and loyal reader of The New Yorker -- Have been for years. David Denby, who as many of you know, writes the film reviews alongside Anthony Lane. But did you also know that this same David Denby has also written a fascinating, page turning quasi autobiography and foray into the stock market's seven circles??

The book is titled American Sucker, and as the titled insinuates, Denby believes investors are dupes, pawns in a game run by Information Conglomerates like CNBC and myriad other media. I just started the book, but so far Denby's candor is intriguing -- stuck in the middle of a nasty divorce, the author tries his hand at the booming stock market of the late 90s in hope of creating enough wealth to save his posh Manhattan apartment. Denby intersperses his nocturnal adventures as an online trader with acerbic thoughts on the ways in which the rapid proliferation of information -- hallmark of the New Economy -- leads investors into addictive behavioral patterns. More to come...
